We've seen Dwight Howard throw on a cape during the NBA's slam dunk contest. Blackhawks winger Patrick Kane decided to do his own Superman impression during Saturday's NHL skills competition. Kane broke out a cape, as well as a pair of Clark Kent glasses, during the breakaway challenge. He then skated in on St. Louis goaltender Brian Elliott, and dove to the ice in a Superman-esque manner. Kane then grabbed the puck with his left hand and passed it over to his stick, eventually sliding it past Elliott for the goal. Kane followed that fancy goal up with an apparent...
Zdeno Chara apparently isn't getting tired of breaking his own record. The Bruins defenseman once again won the hardest shot contest at the annual NHL skills competition. This time, Chara dialed it all the way up to 108.8 mph. That mark breaks the record Chara set last season, when he blasted a 105.9-mph slap shot. Last year's shot broke the record of 105.4 mph, which he set in 2009. Shea Weber, Chara's biggest competition for the contest, topped out at 106 mph. Check out Chara's record-breaking howitzer in the video below.
The breakaway challenge at the NHL's skills competition allows players to get creative, and Ducks winger Corey Perry took advantage of that luxury. Perry went up against St. Louis Blues netminder Brian Elliott during Saturday's event, and he decided to ditch his usual stick for something smaller. Much smaller. Perry skated in on Elliott and stopped halfway. He then busted out a mini hockey stick before resuming his shooutout attempt, which ended in a goal. The goal is awesome because, well, who doesn't love a good game of mini hockey? Of course, such sticks are typically limited to knee hockey...
Final, Team Chara 12, Team Alfredsson 21: An impressive showing from Team Alfredsson in the Elimination Shootout pushes the hometown favorites to a victory that will end up looking a little more lopsided than it actually was. The high point for the Bruins will obviously be Zdeno Chara defending his Hardest Shot title for the fifth straight year and once again setting a new record at 108.8 mph. That's not a bad consolation prize. The Ottawa crowd will head home happy and the All-Stars will have a chance to rest up before Sunday's matinee main event. Tim Thomas, Tyler Seguin...
The road back to the ice has been tough for Sidney Crosby, and now the journey might be a lot more serious than expected. In addition to dealing with his concussion problems, Crosby was reportedly suffering from a neck injury, according to Bob McCown of Sportsnet 590 The Fan. The Pittsburgh Penguins star was concerned about the treatment he was receiving and saw a specialist in Utah that was recommended by friend and New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady. During that visit, it was discovered that there was a problem with Crosby's C1 and C2 vertebrae, but he has supposedly...
The Red Sox reportedly made a contract offer to Roy Oswalt this week, but the right-hander could be taking his talents elsewhere. Oswalt is nearing a deal with the St. Louis Cardinals, according to ESPN.com's Gordon Edes. A major league source reportedly stated that a deal could get done "soon," although Cardinals general manager John Mozeliak insists that the report is just rumors, and nothing more. CBS Sports' Jon Heyman reports that Oswalt turned down a one-year deal worth around $10 million from the Detroit Tigers. Heyman mentioned the Rangers as a team that Oswalt was eyeing, but FOX Sports'...
Do you have any idea how fast 108 miles per hour is? It's really absurd. But Zdeno Chara can hit a hockey puck that fast with four-fifths of a mph to spare, as he showed during Saturday night's Hardest Shot portion of the NHL All-Star Skills Challenge. NESN Nation's Dan Duquette is kind of blown away with this one. That's almost too fast to make something move. Regardless, he's giving Chara our "Mr. Big Shot" player of the night. Who's yours? Who is your "Mr. Big Shot" player of the night? Join NESN Nation: In-game home page | Twitter |...
Appearing in a Super Bowl can offer players a multitude of perks. There's the chance to win the Lombardi Trophy, a heightened profile, player bonuses... and UGG boots. According to The Boston Globe's Shalise Manza Young, each member of the New England Patriots received a pair of UGGs in front of his locker. The UGG boots being delivered to the Patriots shouldn't be seen as a random act, though, as Pats quarterback Tom Brady is one of the company's biggest celebrity endorsers. Young initially believed that Brady was behind the gifts, but tweeted that the boots were most likely not...
Dwight Howard and the Orlando Magic have had a tough week, and the superstar center is getting frustrated with the lackluster play of his teammates. After a 93-67 loss to the New Orleans Hornets Friday night, Howard ripped into the rest of the Magic roster, according to ESPN. "I look at guys and they don't look like they want to play," Howard said. "I told them at halftime, 'If you don't want to play, just stay in the locker room,' because it don't make sense for a team who we should beat to just demolish us." Howard posted 28 points...
Liverpool knocked Manchester United out of the FA Cup on Saturday, downing its eternal rivals by a score of 2-1. Although a few players delivered top-notch performances, the LFC supporters at Anfield easily won "man of the match" honors. As with any game between LFC and United, Saturday's meeting was filled with subplots. But none was bigger than Patrice Evra's first visit to Anfield since the racial abuse storm between Luis Suarez and him hit. The LFC star was serving the seventh of an eight-game ban, and Evra was always going to receive a hostile reception. But something happened at...
